Dated Images

About This Site

Dated Images on GenPics.Org is a site devoted to displaying dated photographs, with brief discussions of why we think the date is or is not likely to be accurate. There is really no way to be 100% sure a photo was taken on any particular date, but there are many clues as to the approximate date for any image. This site shows how images can be evaluated to see if the date fits the image.

Most of the photographs on this site come from the ClassyArts.com digital collection (only a tiny fraction of which have been placed on-line to date), but a few are from other websites. In all cases, we only include images that we believe are in the public domain. That means you do not need our permission to copy images from this site for any use you want, though of course we always appreciate a link-back and acknowledgment as the source of the image.

  1. Hi -

I like your website(s) and have been inspired by your collection. So many forgotten faces and yet with some internet detective work, names and places get discovered. It was while doing my own research that I found yours, which had the name of a lost photographer on one of my photos. It is amazing that all this history is becoming more available on the web. I have taken your model to heart and will add more info on the photographers in my photo collection in the hope they might provide help to others doing similar research on genealogy and early photos. Thanks. MIKE BRUBAKER

  2. Thanks for your comments Mike, I’ve added a marching-band photo for you today, from a 1911 post card. Unfortunately, I don’t have a scan of the back side, so I don’t know the photographer (if it is even marked).
